Triathlon a triumph for Bayside Physio Teams

Triathlon Physios

Before the start it was all nerves as Jacob, Mark and Candace listened intently to the briefing. Then it was into action. As the two Bayside Physiotherapy teams contested the Hervey Bay Corporate Triathlon. The A team (Candace, Jacob and Lianne) did very well finishing the couse in a respectable 46minutes and 53 seconds. The B team (Mark, Sam and Jacqui)were happy to finish and did it in a time of 62 minutes and 53 seconds which was close to 3 minutes faster than their predicted time. All up it was a fun day. Well done to the Hervey Bay Tri Club for organising such a great event.

Pilates, not just for girls!

There is a misconception that pilates exercises are only for girls. The inventor of pilates exercises was Joseph Pilates, a man! He originally invented the pilates exercises to help injured soldiers regain their movement and function in World War One. The exercises were then adapted and became popular with ballet dancers, which is probably where the misconception started.

Pilates is now being used by teams such as the recently crowned world champion All Blacks, Canterbury Bulldogs and Melbourne Storm. AFL player Jonathon Brown and cricketer Shane Watson have both credited pilates with helping to overcome their chronic injuries.

Pilates is all about movement control. It is a series of exercises designed to improve your movement. If you want to run, swim or cycle faster, perform better on the sporting field, or just get through your day with less back pain, then pilates could be for you, whether you are male or female. It is a gentle, but effective way of improving your movement.

At Bayside we offer pilates classes in small groups. You can also see one of our physios for a one on one session and see if pilates is for you. Click here for more information http://www.baysidephysiotherapy.com/pilates.htm

Students at Bayside Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy Student in Hervey Bay

We currently have a student physiotherapist, Alexandra who has come to Hervey Bay all the way from Meinerzhagen, Germany. Alex is in her final year ( 4th) of studies and has come to Australia to learn and practice physiotherapy’ Aussie-style’!  Alex, as she likes to be called, is staying in Maryborough with her Aunty, and so far in her first few weeks here has explored Fraser Island, Rainbow Beach and whale watching. We have also been host to 4 work experience students from Xavier Catholic College who are all expressing an  interest in becoming physiotherapists.

Every student has the opportunity to ‘shadow ‘each of the physiotherapists at the clinic allowing them to experience the variety of treatments provided by the therapists.   Candace, our Canadian locum physiotherapist, has been overseeing the students, and ensuring their experience with us, is a good one in which lots is learnt.  Also, having students on board helps keep us therapists up to date, as we are often asked lots of questions!  So on your next visit to us, you may meet one of these students as you are being treated!

Mark Lectures at Olympic Sports Medicine Course in PNG

Mark Cassidy was the keynote Sports Physiotherapist speaker at the International Olympic Committee Basic Level Sports Medicine Course, held at the Shady Rest Hotel in Port Moresby, PNG, from July 1-3. He was speaking to Doctors, Physiotherapists, Exercise Physiologists and Paramedics in preperation for their roles with the PNG team at the South Pacific Games, to be held in New Caledonia in August.

Mark taught theory and gave practical advice to the participants, who came from all parts of Papua New Guinea. The practical sessions included ankle strapping, shoulder exercises and core stability exercises. The participants appreciated Mark's knowledge and experience and will be able to put in place their new skills to improve the performance and better rehabilitate the PNG athletes. Injury prevention was also a theme that came up throughout the weekend course. Less injuries should mean better results for the PNG team.

Mark found the visit to PNG fascinating. He was intrigued by the hardships and limited facilities the sports medicine team has to work with. He hopes his visit will stimulate further advances in sports medicine and physiotherapy in all regions of PNG.
